British Freshwater Fishes,

AU$1,750.00
By: HOUGHTON, Rev William,
ID No.: 5000

William Mackenzie London  1879 1st edn. 2 Volumes (Divisions).  Folio Illust. Brown cloth board covers with  gilt lettering to spine and front cover, gilt and black decoration to spine and front cover.  Houghton was rector of Preston on the Weald Moors in Shropshire. A serious naturalist, he became a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London. To produce his major work, Houghton studied fish specimens at the British Museum. He aimed his book at the fisherman rather than the naturalist, and the text (of which there is, unusually, plenty) gives information about recognition, feeding and breeding habits, habitat, bait and so on.  The 41 colour plates generally show fish against a natural background or swimming in an underwater setting. The volumes show 38 engraved heading views of regions where the fish occur with diagrams. The text describes the species and their habitats. The volumes are bound in embossed covers with a vignette of an angler holding a fish and freshwater fish motifs in the corners.  Ex Acclimitisation Society library copy.

Division 1  1-92p.  20 Colour Plates. Three loose pages.  Cover and spine are rubbed and spine has a section (6CM.) missing. Corners bumped. Slight foxing.  -Good.

Division 2.  93-204p. 21 colour plates. Cover and spine rubbed and corners bumped. FEP torn. Slight foxing. -Good
